Onam Sadya is a meal fit for a king. Rice is the hero with 21 side dishes that make up the sadya.
Though I have eaten a fair share of idli's and dosas, the thali I truly
relished was on an Alleppy houseboat. The food was divine. Rice,
sambhars, vegetables - we could eat forever. Then came two weddings
where we were introduced to even more courses and flavors. Below is my
humble attempt to make a sadya worth its name.
My current inspiration to cook this sadya is my neighbour J who is an amazing cook and has been feeding us amazing Keralite food!
Items:
Rice - Boiled Rice (not basmati)
Sambhar - Split pigeon peas daal with vegetables
Parippu - South Indian style split green gram daal
Potato Mezhukkupuratti - Potato stir-fry
Beetroot Pachadi - Beetroot Raita
Avial - Mixed vegetables cooked with coconut and curd
Cabbage Thoran - Cabbage cooked with coconut
Plaintain Pulissery - Plaintain curry with curd
Pumpkin Erissery- Pumpkin cooked with bengal gram
Banana Chips
Salt
Puli Inji - Ginger and tamarind pickle
Pal Payasam - Rice cooked in sweetened milk, a type of kheer
Papadam
I used two main sources for the recipes, Sharmi's Passions and Edible Garden, sometimes using the recipes as is and sometimes mixing up two recipes.
The banana chips are store bought from the local kerala store, the papadams are also from there.
i can vouch thats this mean was a wonderful delicious meal. Gujrati wife cooking a south indian delicacy for a punjabi husband..thats india for you.. loved every bit of it. Thank you :)
